Why a global eSIM can make your phone appear to be in another country

You land in one country and websites act as if you are in another. The cause is how roaming data is routed, and it matters more for streaming, banking and search than for maps. Here is how to check.

It is one of the stranger moments of a trip. The map puts you exactly where you are standing, while a search engine, a streaming app or your bank seems convinced you are somewhere else entirely. Nothing is broken. Your phone has two locations at once, the one it measures and the one its internet address implies, and a global eSIM is very good at pulling the two apart.

Your data can take the long way round

When a phone uses a mobile network in a country other than the one its SIM belongs to, it is roaming, and roaming data can take one of two routes. In the first, called local breakout, the network you are visiting gives the phone its internet address and sends its traffic onward from close to where you are. In the second, home routing, the traffic is carried back to the operator that issued the SIM, which assigns the address and sends everything onward from there.

An IETF analysis of roaming describes home routing as the main mode for international roaming of internet data, largely because it keeps charging between the two operators straightforward. A global eSIM is, almost by definition, a roaming product: unless its profile was issued by an operator in the country you are standing in, the local network is carrying you as a visitor. On a home-routed plan, your internet address belongs to the issuing operator, whose country may be neither your home nor your destination.

What your IP address tells a website

A website can ask your browser for the device's location, and you can refuse. What every site sees regardless is the IP address your connection arrives from. Google's own help pages explain the principle plainly: IP addresses are roughly based on geography, so any website you use may learn something about your general area from yours.

On a home-routed plan, that estimate lands in the issuing operator's country. The lookup is not faulty. It is correctly describing an address that belongs to an operator somewhere else, which is how a phone can appear to be in another country to every website at once while you are standing still in the arrivals hall. A plan that breaks out locally behaves the other way round: the network you are visiting assigns the address, so the estimate points to the country you are actually in.

What notices, and what does not

The effect is selective, which is what makes it confusing. Maps are the least affected: a phone can work out its precise position for itself, and that is the location navigation apps use to give directions, so the blue dot stays under your feet. Search is more mixed. A search engine combines several location signals, and when it falls back on your internet address, nearby results can drift towards the wrong country.

Streaming services notice at once, because catalogues are licensed region by region. Netflix explains that a title can be available in one country and not another, partly because different studios or distributors hold the rights in different places. If a service decides which library to show from where your connection appears to be, arriving from an address in another country can mean a different set of titles.

Banks notice for another reason. Authentication guidance from US financial regulators lists geolocation and IP address matching among the device signals a bank can use to recognise a customer's device, weak on their own but useful combined with other controls. An address in an unexpected country is one more signal in that mix, so a login from abroad can prompt an extra check.

How to check where your phone appears to be

The check takes a minute. With Wi-Fi switched off and the travel eSIM carrying data, open your maps app and confirm the blue dot is where you are: that is the phone's own position. Then search for something local on Google and look at the location information at the bottom of the results page, which says where the estimate came from. "From your device" means Google used the phone's own location. "From your internet address" means it relied on your connection, and if the area it gives is in another country, that is where websites think you are.

If the two locations disagree, your data is most likely leaving through another country, and there are three sensible responses, none of which involves fighting the phone:

  • Accept the mismatch for the trip, because navigation works from the phone's own position.
  • Tell a streaming service or your bank where you really are when it asks, rather than trying to change its guess.
  • If local behaviour matters, look for a plan whose data breaks out locally in the country you are visiting.
